Foster + Partners’ Project Architects - Senior Partner, Michael Jones, and Partner, Kate Murphy, led this very special Members Only tour of the pioneering Bloomberg European Headquarters that opened in the heart of the City of London at the end of 2017.
This is the first building developed by Bloomberg, which is the embodiment of its culture and values - defined and inspired by the vision and generosity of its Founder, Owner and CEO Michael Bloomberg. The form, massing and materiality are sensitive to its historic setting, yet clearly of its own time. In contrast to the dignified exterior, a dynamic interior brings together the 4,000-strong London workforce in a single building that is an exemplar of sustainability and wellbeing in its design and operation, creating a landmark workplace to promote collaboration and communication, and attract the brightest global talent.
To do this, the project challenged many preconceptions in setting new standards and industry benchmarks, supported by unprecedented levels of innovation, research and investment at every level. A focus on sustainability and a strong environmental agenda underpinned the entire project, with self-shading facades and natural ventilation throughout the deep-plan spaces which contributed to the building being rated BREEAM Outstanding, with a score of 98.5% – the highest-ever design stage score awarded to an office development worldwide.
The evening concluded with supper at a nearby restaurant.
